چکیده

In this paper we explore and extend the design space of the recent RAMP (Read Atomic Multi-Partition) transaction system for large-scale partitioned data stores. Arriving at a mature distributed system design through implementation and experimental validation is a labor-intensive task, so that only a limited number of design alternatives can be explored in practice. The developers of RAMP did implement and validate three design alternatives for RAMP, and sketched three additional designs. This work addresses two questions: (1) How can the design space of a distributed transaction system such as RAMP be explored with modest effort, so that substantial knowledge about design alternatives can be gained before designs are implemented? and (2) How realistic and informative are the results of such design explorations? We answer the first question by: (i) formally modeling eight RAMP-like designs (five by the RAMP developers and three of our own) in Maude as probabilistic rewrite theories, and (ii) using statistical model checking of those models to analyze key performance metrics such as throughput, average latency, and degrees of strong consistency and read atomicity. We answer the second question by showing that our quantitative analyses: (i) are consistent with the experimental results obtained by the RAMP developers for their implemented designs; (ii) confirm the conjectures made by the RAMP developers for their other three unimplemented designs; and (iii) uncover some promising new designs that seem attractive for some applications.

Reachability checking in complex and concurrent software systems using intelligent search methods

Software system verification is an efficient technique for ensuring the correctness of a software product, especially in safety-critical systems in which a small bug may have disastrous consequences. The goal of software verification is to ensure that the product fulfills the requirements. Studies show that the cost of finding and fixing errors in design time is less than finding and fixing the...

Using Statistical and Symbolic Simulation for Microprocessor Performance Evaluation

As microprocessor designs continue to evolve, many optimizations reach a point of diminishing returns. We introduce HLS, a hybrid processor simulator which uses statistical models and symbolic execution to evaluate design alternatives. This simulation methodology enables quick and accurate generation of contour maps of the performance space spanned by design parameters. We validate the accuracy...

System Dynamics and Feedback Control Design Problem formulations for Real Time Ramp Metering

This paper formulates the ramp metering control problem as a real-time feedback control problem. The development is shown by modeling freeway sections, and hence the results are immediately applicable to isolated ramp metering problems. The ideas presented in this paper can be utilized to develop coordinated ramp metering feedback control techniques. Three different forms of the formulation for...

Automatic Support for Verification of Secure Transactions in Distributed Environment using Symbolic Model Checking

Symbolic model checking has been used to formally verify specifications of secure transactions in a system for business-to-business applications. The fundamental principles behind symbolic model checking are presented along with techniques used to model mutual exclusion of processes and atomic transactions. The computational resources required to check the example process are presented, and the...

Probabilistic Symmetry Reduction for a System with Ring Buffer

Probabilistic model checking is an emerging technology for analyzing systems which exhibit stochastic behaviors. The verification of a larger system using probabilistic model checking faces the same state explosion problem as ordinary model checking. Probabilistic symmetry reduction is a technique to tackle this problem. In this paper, we study probabilistic symmetry reduction for a system with...
